I've been a resident of Johnson County for most of my adult life, always engaging in ways to make it an awesome place to live, work, learn, and play. With nearly two decades experience in nonprofit management (having raised and managed millions in funding for our state), earning a graduate degree in public health and studying business management, and being a mom of three boys who are educated in our county, I am your ideal candidate for at-large progress.
You may be thinking, "what experience does a photographer have to run for County Council?"
Prior to becoming a full-time photographer (from part-time status in 2018), I spent my 20s and 30s in nonprofit management. While in undergrad, I worked for professors at IUPUI and IPFW, writing and editing their Federal Grant Proposals and submitting their Federal Reports. I then went to Girls Inc, National Resource Center at the age of 19 and served as their National Curriculum Development Assistant until finishing undergrad in 2005. There, I worked closely with the National Curriculum Director to write, edit, and manage the amazing curricula used nationally to help young girls to be strong, smart, and bold. After finishing graduate school in my mid-20s at IU School of Medicine with a Master's of Public Health, I went to the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County (the entity that owns Eskenazi Health and the Marion County Public Health Department) where I served as the Grants Director at (then) Wishard Hospital. In that role, I was responsible for staff who wrote and managed about $28 million in funding annually to help support programming in and around Central Indiana. Some of this funding was Federal funds allocated to the state and other funds were from national and local foundations to support programming at the hospital including the ER, the Infusion Center, the Women's Health Center, Center for Hope, and more.
In 2010, I was given the honor to serve as the Public Health Director of Women's Health in the Maternal and Child Health Division at the Indiana State Department of Health under Governor Daniel's administration. In this role, I managed 8 staff members who wrote and oversaw millions of dollars in funding for women's health programming throughout the state of Indiana. I travelled frequently to DC for funding meetings and managed about $40million in funding for the state. In tandem, I oversaw one-third of the state's 92 county health departments that offered women's health programming. After my one-year contract was over, I joined Second Helpings, Inc, a local nonprofit that transforms lives through the power of food where I was the Director of Development, managing marketing, development, volunteer, and event staff and helping to raise for a $2 million organization. And by my mid-30s, I established my own nonprofit management and development firm, "Paradigm Development Associates" where I had clients such as Downtown Indy, Inc, the American College of Sports Medicine, Play Ball Indiana, the Indiana Transgender Wellness Alliance, Emory University, and more. Some of these contracts included my in-house presence as the Foundation Director or the Business Development Director where I was in charge of raising and managing millions of dollars for each entity. In a nut shell, I know budget creation, management, development, and fundraising and I was one of the most successful development professionals in our state to date.
Clearly, I'm now "just a photographer," but I love what I do as second career. I've grown my business through hardworking, entrepreneurial spirit, engagement of others, and of course, managing my operations daily. When I'm not snapping photos and managing my business, I dedicate my free time helping our community in any way I can. I serve on the Greenwood Area Planning Commission under the appointment of Mayor Mark Myers and I am the Youth Cheer Director at Whiteland & Clark Pleasant School Systems (helping to direct 7 assistant coaches and over 50 youth during football season). I'm also the Marketing Director for the Johnson County Democratic Party. And NOW, with great excitement, I am running as a JOHNSON COUNTY COUNCIL AT-LARGE member.
In my personal life, I have three amazingly gifted, kind, and hilarious rambunctious boys who are involved in band, soccer, swimming, and academic teams. You’ll find the us usually having a blast on social media and in real life — we sing, we dance, we watch Netflix, we go to concerts, and we are always having fun!
You will find that I’m a REAL candidate with a REAL life and a real past. I’m not a life-long politician but I am a lifelong passionate human being who has always strived to do her best. I treat people with kindness and fairness. Justice and equality are two main pillars of my life; you’ll probably find that YOU can relate to me as mom, an entrepreneur, and a human.
I’m running for office because I know I can bring a moderate perspective to the table that benefits ALL people in the community. I’m a mom, community volunteer, an entrepreneur, and someone educated in the world of Federal, State, and Local funding with a graduate degree in public health. I come with a multi-faceted world view. care about our County and want to be sure everyone is heard, concerns are noted, and that common-sense drives policies, ordinances, and budgetary allocations.
I spent nearly 2 decades in nonprofit management including formerly serving as the WOmen’s Health Director for Indiana Dept of Health under Mitch Daniels’ administration—where I oversaw, reported, and requested over $30 mil in funding. I was also the Grants Director at (then) Wishard (now Eskenzi), and was responsible for budgetary planning and reporting for over 40 hospital departments. When you combine my knowledge of statistics and epidemiology with my MBA training, I am the most ideal candidate who understands large county-wide budgets. With this knowledge, I will work to ensure that city funds are allocated efficiently and transparently. It’s time for our county council to roll up their sleeves and work side-by-side with our treasurer, commissioners, and each department to identify real funding needs and sustainable funding sources. I will bring fresh ideas, reinvigorated energy, and think outside the box to investigate all avenues to ensure our county continues to grow in the right direction at the right pace.
